Aztech was incorporated in 1993 by Geoff Salter, a graduate of Kingston’s own prestigious Queen’s University.
The company enjoyed early success with global customers by specializing in the design of electrical engineering services featuring wireless technology, embedded systems and low power. Aztech achieved international acclaim after developing a remote satellite tracking system which allowed clients to monitor the precise location and state of railway cars. Aztech then expanded the system for the oil and gas and shipping industry to monitor such things as the temperature of refrigerated cargo containers, the course and speed of ships, and the amount of fuel in an individual truck.
In 2005, Aztech began looking for ways to leverage its team’s current technologies and know-how to tackle Ontario’s energy challenges, and in 2006 added a Clean Technology Division that specialized in energy conservation and demand management products for the home. This new direction was prompted by the Government of Ontario’s mandate to switch from traditional mechanical electricity meters to the new Automated Meter Infrastructure (AMI). The company has rapidly become one of North America's leading designers and manufacturers of simple-to-use smart grid accessories. With the demand for reliable energy and cost information exploding, Aztech believes its In-Home Display will be the product of choice by consumers and utility companies alike. Aztech has been piloting an expandable product line to include communication with gas and water meters, in addition to electricity use.
Aztech now employs 15 full-time personnel in its 5,000-square-foot headquarters and design centre in Kingston, Ontario, Canada. Aztech also has offices in Annapolis, Maryland.
Aztech In-Home Displays are currently in use in the Ontario service areas of Hydro One, Toronto Hydro and Kingston Utilities. Additionally, trials of the Aztech IHD are currently underway in Kentucky, Maryland, Minnesota, Nebraska, and Quebec. Additional trials of the Aztech IHD are planned by more Canadian and American utilities later this year and next.
Aztech is committed to reducing its own energy use, and every member of our team is dedicated to preserving the environment for every generation.
